Family Therapy in Philadelphia and World Wide: Family therapy typically involves one therapist seeing an entire family or several members, the former being more beneficial, to address issues that impact the whole family. Family therapy is a useful modality to help strengthen the ways in which family members relate to one another. Frequently, family therapy is sought out by parents concerned about a child’s behavior, sibling rivalry, divorce, life stressors and various other concerns relating to life cycle changes, such as a child preparing to enter college. Often, dynamics within a family change when divorce or death occurs, and families are blended, or a parent loses a job. These difficult transitional issues are all commonly addressed in family therapy sessions.
When seeking therapy, it is always preferable to choose a therapist who has experience working with the issue that you would like to focus on in treatment. For example, if you are experiencing problems with parenting issues, it is best to meet with a therapist who has specialized training in that particular area. Not all family therapists have the same training or clinical experience. Key questions to ask a therapist are: How many years have you been in practice? How many clients do you see a week? How many clients have you treated with similiar issues in the past year? |
