Cognitive Disorders

Cognitive Disorder Treatment in Philadelphi and World Wide. Cognitive Disorders

Cognitive disorders are best thought of as a “thinking problem.”  The person’s mind is impaired. The mental impairment causes:  poor judgment, distorted perceptions, memory problems and, and difficulty being alert.

Common cognitive disorders are:

  •  Amnesia:  memory loss due to an injury or traumatic event.  However, sometimes people with amnesia are able to perform normal cognitive functions.  People can have long term or short term memory losses.
  • Delirium: short attention span that can last anywhere from an hour to days. (Picture someone walking around mindlessly and have no idea what is going on around them).
  • Dementia: deterioration of brain functioning which can result in:  loss of problem solving skills, memory abilities, and perception.  Dementia is most frequently seen amongst the aging population.

Cognitive disorders are typically diagnosed by doctors. There are a series of tests used by doctors to determine and which type cognitive disorder a person has. If you or a loved one has experienced some of the following signs or symptoms we strongly encourage you to schedule an appointment for testing cognitive functioning with your primary care doctor:

  • Decline in memory, difficulty remembering past events
  • Poor of concentration
  • Altered personality
  • Changes in sleep patterns
  • Auditory and visual perception changes
  • Bewilderment and confusion when a new idea, concept or situation is presented

If you have been diagnosed with one or more cognitive disorders and are seeking guidance in adapting to your situation, it is best to find a therapist who specializes in this area.  For example, if you have been documented with delirium and want to improve your memory processing, a trained therapist will know the specific techniques / methods to strengthen your deficits.  If you are a support person, again, working with a trained specialist in this area can give you guidance on how to handle the situation most effectively.  A general mental health therapist can help you explore your grief and sadness as you cope with the loss of the person as you knew them, but a trained therapist in this particular cognitive disorder will help you develop the specific skill set needed to assist your loved one.
