Philosophy: A full description of my treatment philosophy and practice is available at www.DavidRothLCSW.com.
My clinical orientation is rooted in several sources. My earliest training in trauma theory and cognitive behavioral therapy taught me much about the practice of psychotherapy. I learned the foundational skills of therapy and immersed myself in our emotional and biological responses to traumatic events. As I helped survivors of sexual abuse gain relief from the pain of trauma and find new hope for life I simultaneously experienced my own growth as a clinician.
As I started to work with families and couples my understanding of the therapeutic process deepened and expanded. My appreciation for the psychodynamic approach to therapy grew immensely as I sat with families and explored how we as individuals work. All of us can learn to view ourselves within the intergenerational process that shapes how we think—this can be particularly fruitful in psychotherapeutic work with your partner or spouse. As we do this work, our thoughts and actions become more deeply known to us and our behaviors become more thoroughly understood. I've been moved by the peacefulness that accompanies this journey into consciousness.
Finally, I've been influenced by Buddhist meditation and philosophy. The influence is not necessarily evident in my words or outward style, but rather is deeply foundational to how I see the world and people in it. Meditation and Buddhist thought have given me a lens through which I see our basic human goodness as brightly radiant. I've learned about the tremendous joy we can find as we become un-stuck, and I see that rich potential in each of the people I work with in therapy.

Practice: Psychotherapy is about being good to ourselves. It's about being vulnerable and open and real. It's about seeking out challenge, wading into what scares us, and refusing to look away from who we are. It's about shifting our perspective, being still, and allowing ourselves to see clearly.
You and I can look together at the difficulties you're experiencing and explore how I can be helpful. My approach is engaging, professional, and open. I'm passionate about the practice of psychotherapy and believe deeply in our human potential to feel better and come fully to life. If you're interested in the work of therapy I invite you to call or email me.
