Sexuality is a critical component of health in the aging population. Most seniors still enjoy having an intimate relationship with a partner. With people living longer, the chances of seniors becoming single – either through death of a loved one, or divorce has skyrocketed. Unfortunately, there are a lot of myths and misconceptions about sexuality in the elderly population. Often elderly men who are sexual are perceived as dirty old man, and woman are perceived as horny toads. Sex is something reserved for the young and beautiful, and at the very least, for procreation. Thus, elderly people’s need for intimacy is often overlooked. Frequently, the elderly are now finding themselves in the unique situation of being single and needing to once again navigate the world of dating without the support of friends and family to help them successfully navigate the changing times and their changing needs. . In the elderly population, intimacy presents unique obstacles.
